Cameron County Civil Legal Division Wins a Petition on Mandamus Related to their Sheriff

On September 13, 2021, Judge Gloria Rincones ordered that Cameron County Civil Legal Division Chief Counsel Juan A Gonzales be disqualified as counsel for the Cameron County Government due to a conflict of interest between his representation for the County and prior consultive natured work for Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza. This ruling was decided in Cameron County District Court Cause: 2021-DCL-02243.

The matter stems from the Courthouse Security matter where Sheriff Garza demanded he be in control of the Courthouse Security.

We first published this matter when the Temporary Restraining Order was issued.

Most recently, Counsel for Juan A Gonzalez filed a Petition for Mandamus Relief. The 13th Court of Appeals has issued an Emergency Stay to determine if Juan A Gonzalez should be disqualified or if he can represent the County Government in this cause.

The Courthouse Security matter has been anything but boring. It will be interesting to see what occurs in conclusion, but it is apparent the County Commissions believe the overlapping law of their authority interconnects with who is the ultimate authority to perform Courthouse Security.
